On Sunday morning in Gaza’s Nuseirat camp, 13-year-old Abdullah and other children were killed by an Israeli airstrike while collecting water from a distribution point. His father, Mahmoud Abdul Rahman Ahmed, described the children as hungry and thirsty, queuing for water when the strike hit without warning. Graphic footage confirmed the aftermath.
The Israeli military admitted the missile missed its intended target — a member of Palestinian Islamic Jihad — due to a technical error, and expressed regret for civilian casualties. However, Mahmoud accused Israel of deliberately sending a message that even water access won't be allowed.
Al-Awda hospital reported 10 deaths, including six children, and 16 injuries. The UN called the incident part of a worsening “human-made drought crisis,” where many in Gaza receive less than the emergency minimum of 15 liters of water daily due to fuel shortages, infrastructure damage, and ongoing attacks.
UN and aid officials condemned the attack, with UNICEF urging Israel to review its rules of engagement. Sam Rose from UNRWA called the strike emblematic of broader suffering, as an average of a classroom full of children are killed daily in Gaza.
Another similar tragedy occurred days earlier when 10 children and 3 women were killed outside a clinic.
Despite these casualties, Israeli representatives continue to blame Hamas for using civilians as shields. Mahmoud, like many in Gaza, urged the international community to pressure Israel to stop the war, saying, “We are victims. This massacre must end.”
